Annual herbs, 30-100 cm tall. Stem erect, cylindric, woody at base, apically corymbosely branched. Leaves alternate, linear, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate, 1-4 cm x 1-5 mm, 3- veined from base, base attenuate, apex acute. Flowers solitary, axillary or in broad cymes or corymbose racemes, 15-20 mm in diameter, blue, showy, ebracteate, actinomorphic, bisexual, 5-merous, hypogynous; pedicels 1.5-2 cm long, erect. Sepals 5, free, imbricate, ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 5-8 mm long, 3-veined from base, margin white, entire or ciliate near apex, apex acute to acuminate. Petals 5, free, obovate, margin irregularly shallowly remotely crenate, blue, veins prominent, 8-12 mm long, contorted. Stamens 5; filaments ca. 8 mm long, connate at base; anthers 2 mm long, bithecous. Staminodes 0. Carpels 5, syncarpous; ovary ovoid, 10-locular due to secondary septa, 1 ovule per loculus, placentation axile; styles 5, free, connate at base, ca. 3 mm long; stigmas linear or linear-clavate, 1.5 mm long. Capsules subglobose, 1.5-2 cm long, 6-9 mm in diameter, beaked, septicidal, with 10 seeds. Seeds brown, oblong, flattened, 3.5-5 mm long, shiny.
